"Preparing for the Impacts of the Winter Storm: What Oklahoma Residents Need to Know"

Oklahoma is currently under a winter storm warning as sleet moves through the state. Sleet is a type of precipitation that forms when raindrops freeze into ice pellets before reaching the ground. This can make roads and sidewalks slippery and dangerous, particularly for drivers and pedestrians.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has advised residents to stay off the roads if possible, and to take extra precautions if they must travel. This includes allowing extra time to reach their destination, slowing down, and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles.

Additionally, the NWS has warned that power outages and tree damage may occur due to the weight of the ice on power lines and tree branches. Residents are advised to prepare for possible power outages by stocking up on supplies, charging their devices, and having backup plans for heating and lighting.

The sleet is expected to continue into the evening hours before transitioning to snow overnight. The NWS has warned of significant snow accumulations, particularly in northern and western Oklahoma, which could make travel even more difficult.

In light of these conditions, schools, government offices, and businesses may be closed or have delayed openings. Residents are advised to stay updated on any closures and to plan accordingly.

It is important to stay safe during this winter weather event. Take extra precautions if you must travel and be prepared for possible power outages. Stay updated on the latest weather conditions and warnings from the National Weather Service.
